SETTING THE TONE

CLASS PICTURES is a deep-dive based companion to KILL COMMUNICATION'S ongoing investigation into the sociology of the word "emo", focusing on specific bands and movements in emo history. At the backbone of CLASS PICTURES is a rule of KILL COMMUNICATION'S invention:

THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL VIEW OF "NO REAL EMO":

As nobody can truly decide whether something is or is not emo, we must assume that anything which has been called emo in any meaningful way will be considered emo for the duration of our research.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

In each episode, we discuss:

• The history of the band (or bands) being covered, including all of their musical contributions, break-ups, reunions, hiatuses, and spinoffs.
• Coverage on the band as they relate to “emo” - their connections, their place in the scene, and their opinions on the word.
• Starting in Episode 2, our special "SELLOUT or SNOB" section. As the prevailing opinion in discourse on all sorts of rock music would imply, no artist can persist in legacy without becoming one or the other. Thus, in each episode, we will decide whether the band as a whole (or, permitting, its individual members) are SELLOUTS or SNOBS. Of course, this is all in good fun. So don't have a fit about it.

In the course of this project, we hope to reveal the greater truths of "emo" - what the word means to us as a culture and society, and how that meaning shifts with different music scenes and the overall pop cultural zeitgeist. We are not trying to find out who or what "real emo" is, because we find the description arbitrary. Instead, we aim to find out, really, what emo is about.
